Day 80

Pre-Algebra: Chapter 7-3

Writing 2 step equations

Check the words in the sentences when writing equations that require 2 steps. Less than means subtract, quotient means divide and “is” is the key word for the = sign. Sometimes you can’t add/subtract before you multiply/divide. Problem 11 in tonight’s homework is an example. First we will multiply both sides by 7, then we will subtract 6 from both sides.

Algebra: Chapter 5-4 and 5-5

Scientific Notation and Polynomials

We can write a number as a product of a number and a power of 10. The number must be between 1.0 and 9.999999 (10). Numbers > 0 have positive powers of 10 and numbers < 0, have negative powers of 10. Polynomials are groups of monomials separated by plus or minus symbols. The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of the variables and the degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its terms. You can combine like terms provided the variable and their exponents match exactly. The only thing that is different is the coefficients in the term.
