Days 29 and 30

Pre-Algebra:Chapter 3, Lesson 4 (yesterday, October 9)
Formulas
Using the formulas given, like the “DRT” one (distance = rate * time) where another word for rate is the SPEED, you just plug in (via the “Glade” commercial) the stuff that you know and solve for the variable that is missing!

Chapter 3, Lesson 5 (today, October 10)
Perimeter and Area of Rectangles and Squares
The perimeter (P) of a rectangle of sides L (for length) and W (for width) is:
P = L + L + W + W or P = 2L + 2W
and the formula for the area (A) of the same rectangle is:
A = L * W
Knowing the sides of the rectangle or square, you can plug in what you know to solve for the unknown item. For example, if the area of a rectangle is 45 ft2 and the length L is 9 ft, then using
A = L * W, we have 45 = 9 * W or solving for W, we have W must be equal to 5!
Finding the perimeter and area of rectangles should be pretty easy tonight!

Algebra: Chapter 3, Lesson 7 (yesterday, October 9)
Formulas
With formulas, it is important that you focus on the variable that is to be isolated. Move everything else to the other side by either adding or subtracting, then multiplying and dividing. Don’t forget to add like terms and distribute if possible as well. Just treat ALL the other variables as numbers and concentrate on isolating the variable in question.

Chapter 3, Lesson 8 (today, October 10)
Solving equations with absolute value
Treat the absolute value of | x | as just the variable x when solving equations BUT REMEMBER that there are usually 2 solutions! Example:
| x | = 6, so the answers are -6 and +6.
Remember too, that the | x | cannot have a NEGATIVE VALUE, that is undefined!
