Wednesday, July 21: This morning we went for a walk on the east side of the beach here at Turtle Bay and we discovered another part of the Pirates movie being filmed. This is a beach scene with a Spanish captain who discovers Capt. Jack.

The guard was nice enough to let us take pictures on the set, they should be cool.

Farther down the trail, we ran into a monk seal with pup on the beach. It too was ropped off and volunteers were monitoring their living. Very cool to watch too. An eventful walk this morning.

This is the first time that I am typing on the screen and it is actually pretty do-able.

Drove back west stopping at Banzai and Sunset Beaches for pictures. I bet they are huge in the winter, the water was pretty calm.

Lunch was had at Killer Tacos in Hale’iwa. Just like the ones in Kona, ok fare.

We flew back on a 3:45 flight instead of the 5:05 Iflygo (Mokulele) and had dinner at KBC. Did a few errands at Costco and Home Depot and were home by 7:30 or so.

Tuesday, July 20: Got up for sunrise, clouds obscured the view.

Headed after hotel breakfast to the Kuilima Cove on the hotel property. Free one hour snorkels and we were in the water by 9:30. Very murky and hard to see, we’ve seen much better, oh well.

We saw the Opana Radar Site above the hotel. This site was where the Americans during WWI first detected via RADAR the incoming Japanese during Pearl Harbor. If only people had taken the new technology seriously!.

Sandy hung out at the pool and I went for a walk down the eastern portion of the Turtle Bay. Pretty sights, blue skies and at the point a gun emplacement used during WWII. The bay to the east, Kawela Bay is beautiful, we should go back. Filming was going on for something and they wouldn’t let us back in.

Dinner was at the 21 Degrees North restaurant in the hotel. The meals were quite good and the martini selections (they have 21 different kinds) were awesome. I have some practicing to do.

Monday, July 19: After taking a 10:05 flight to Honolulu, we ended up shopping in the BIG CITY Ala Moana shopping center. Hilo Hatties had some nice silk shirts – they compared them to Tommy Bahamas and I bought 2 of them. On special and local kama’aina (10% off) rates, can’t beat that.

Took the H1, H2 and other freeways and roads to the North Shore Turtle Bay Resort for our mini-mini vacation. It is a little dated, but a very nice hotel. The ocean view rooms are very nice and clean. After a couple of Mai-tais (yummy), we had dinner at the Palm Terrace. It was pork ribs that we shared and they were just ok. It was weird sleeping in a room with air-conditioning running all night.

This hotel is one of the few places that you can see both sunset and sunrise, we’ll see!

Sunday, July 18: A nice slow morning. In the afternoon, we headed to Kona for the monthly Alii Drive craft show. It was OK, smaller than last year.

Dinner was barbeque with grass-fed Waimea beef, New York steaks. Nope … forget the grass-fed, not enough fat and these 2 steaks were terrible and chewy and nervy!

In the evening about 7:50, we got to see the ISS fly overhead for about 3 minutes.

Saturday, July 17: Today we went exploring to the northeast side of the island. We left in the morning and stopped by the Waimea country fair. Beautiful flowers for purchase and we’ll come back next Saturday.

Stopped by the Foodland to get the back-to-school supplies that were requested by Father Bob last week. It is a nice store, much better than the across-the-streer KTA. We can go to church and then hit the grocery store.

Kept heading east on the Mamalahoa Highway (19) to Honoka’a and the Tex Malasada drive-in and restaurant. Deliciously hot Portuguese creme filled doughnuts. Worth the stop.

From there, we headed to the Waipi’o Valley overlook to check it out. It too was breathtaking and the road down is as steep as they say it is. 4×4 necessary on the way down in LOW gear, to keep the brakes from overheating.

Back on Highway 19, we went to millepost 27 (just beyond) and down to Laupahoehoe Point to view the sites. Again, surf that is rough and beautiful to see.

We headed back to Waimea just in time for 5:00 p.m. Mass and then to Solimene’s for dinner. We had a pizza, it was pretty good!

Friday, July 16: Sandy worked for a while, she went to water aerobics and I did my walk. I do want to walk down to the Blue Hawaiian someday.

After lunch, we headed down to A-Beach to relax with our Mai-Tais during happy hour before the pupus at the pool.

Thursday, July 15: Today, I applied to 2 positions available, perhaps, at UH Hilo and at Hawaii Community College, we’ll see. Time consuming … but got it done.

Had a few errands to do down in Kona, hit Costco and Safeway. Stopped by the Harbor House in Honokohau harbor for dinner. My ahi dinner was better than Sandy’s mahi-maihi fish and chips.

Wednesday, July 14: Nice quiet day, lesson #4 with Matt and hitting the ‘woods’. A little more work is required on my stroke to be consistent. Next lesson, in 2 weeks, will be with Matt on the course. I think Sandy and I are just ready to hit the course and see what develops, we’re a little frustrated.

Lunch at Benjy’s, the new Spikes at the Clubhouse. Burger was pretty good.

Research with the brand of clubs we bought unearthed that I have 2 hybrid clubs, the 4 and 5 in lieu of the standard 4 and 5 iron. How you use these is still a mystery to me however.

I updated the Algebra blog to the WordPress 3.0 Twenty-Ten theme, but am using its modified version 2010 Weaver. There are lots of options to play with and for now I am just tweaking.

Dinner was Sandy’s lasagna, excellent with a little Chianti from Italy. The Village Market does have a good selection of wines and other spirits.

Tuesday, July 13: Wet re-sanded, with 600 grit this time, the marble table outside. From everything that I have researched, the table is sealed and now I just have to polish it with polishing compound to bring out the shine.

Benjy’s, the new Spikes at he Clubhouse has happy hour music now from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., today was Archie, playing the electric piano, he was nice and mellow.

BBQ’d ahi tuna for dinner, good stuff.

Monday, July 12: A nice slow day with time to practice golf.

Sunday, July 11: Leisure day. For breakfast we tried the leftover carnitas and rice and beans burrito, yummy. After dinking around in the morning, we headed to Kona to pick up my new iPhone 4 and the electric grill at Macy’s and groceries at Safeway.

We returned for Ahi BBQ dinner from Village Market. The price at Safeway was ＄18.99/lb, while here at the market it was ＄13.99/lb. It pays to comparison shop!

After dinner, I sync’ed my new iPhone 4 with my last iPhone 3G synch and all is well. It is much faster and the process at the Kona AT&T store was actually pretty painless. The assistant even applied the screen protector for me, their cases were rinky-dink, but I have temporary protection!

Saturday, July 10: Felt much better this morning, actually by last night. We decided to go to the beach finally and picked A-Beach to hang out. We had the mango-macadamia nut Hula Girl pancake mix for breakfast. We realized that we need some kind of electric griddle to make pancakes and heat up the tortillas.

Left about 10:30 and spent the morning down at the beach. Had a sandwich from the stand on the beach and they told us that anyone can use the chairs on the beach in front of the Marriot, that we didn’t have to bring our own. Cool to know!

We were thirsty for a Mai-Tai, so we headed to the Marriot bar by the pool and had 2 each and some french fries. Sandy really was hoping for a cheeseburger grilled on a BBQ for lunch so this was second best.

Back to the beach for more relaxing and a litle snooze. We decided to leave and see if we could make Mass at 5:00 p.m. We did, and then decided to try our Tres Hombres in Kawaihea for Mexican Food. Sandy tried the chicken enchilida and shredded beef taco while I tried the carnitas. Both were quite good and we were pleasantly surprised.

We concluded our marathon first season of “24” with the last 2 episodes. I’m not sure what people saw in this show.

Friday, July 9: In the installation process of putting on the new hubcaps, I tweaked my back a little, it’s been worse before. It was windy today as well and Matt called to cancel our lesson. We are scheduled for next Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Rested the whole day …

Putter from Amazon arrived yesterday, anxious to try it .. but will have to wait for another day.

Thursday, July 8: We woke up early in anticipation of getting on the course with Darrell, but … it is howlingly (?) windy and we’ll take a bye, he said early this morning. We practiced driving on the range, chipping and putting practice in the morning. My new putter should be arriving today as well.

Today was our run-around day to Kona. Errands to do, movies to see and places to eat. We ran our of Gin, so our trip was started with a Costco run for more. Their prices are truly amazing as long as you’re buying in volume. The 1.75 liter of Bombay Saphirre was ＄29.95, the same as the 750 ml at the Village Market. Kitchen sponges get moldy/musty fast here, so we actually bought an 18 pack, it should last us a while.

Next stop was Home Depot for some hardware for the Subaru license plate. The car is so low to the ground that we scrape the front plate in some places. The Green Hornet is all better now. Next stop, Toy Story 3, a great movie and I enjoyed it. Reminded me of the kids going off to college and all that emotional stuff. By the way, Rosie DROVE up to Novato to see Tommy on Tuesday and will be returning on Friday, she is growing up.

We stopped by the K-Mart for sundries, Borders Bookstore for golf magazines and the new Ross for Sandy golf shirts. Dinner was at the Macaroni Grill in Waikoloa. A Waiko…blowa day!

Wednesday, July 7: First day that Sandy went to water aerobics. We hit the driving range and practiced some more too!

Sandy made lasagne on Monday, since we were home. Dinner was with Darell and in the conversation, he invited us tomorrow on the golf course. It may have been the wine talking but we are anxious to get our there. I’m not sure Matt would approve, but we WANT to get on the course!

Tuesday, July 6: We were without a car today. Kailua-Kona Autocare picked up the Subau to get new CV boots and front axle assembly. It was an item tagged for fixing last year by the Subaru dealer and we found these folks highly recommended here in the complex to do the work. They offererd, as part of their service, to pick it up and drop it off for us. The owners live here in the Village somewhere. A little expensive, bu their work is A#1.

I started laying out the pacing guide stuff for our Algebra 1a classes next year. I’ve got the schedule layed out and now to begin the tie-in to the standards. This took most of the day to lay out. I hope I am on the right track.

Practiced chipping and putting today!

The Subaru came back to us about 4:45 p.m. or so, all is well. Dinner was Taco salad, yummy!

Monday, July 5: Had our 3rd lesson with Matt today this morning. We learned how to ‘chip’ and went over the putting as well. Practice, practice, our next lesson is Friday and then we move onto to the course and see what it really feels like!

Worked on the marble table outside, wet-sanded with 320 grit paper and it looks nice and uniform in color. The question is to seal it or polish it, research required. My guess – seal it with stone sealer …

Fish, Ahi for dinner. ＄10.99/pound and they really do have great looking fish at the Waikola Village Market.
