Day 46

Pre-Algebra: Benchmark #1 Review

Today we went over the Benchmark #1 review. For homework, we should be going over the problems that we did in class and fixing those that we missed. We may use our study guide for tormorrow’s test.

Algebra: Chapter 7-6

Finding an equation of a line. We have 2 methods to attack this type of problem. We can use the slope-intercept formula, y = mx + b or the point-slope formula, y – y1 = m (x – x1).

In both instances, we must find the slope, m first.

Using the slope-intercept formula, we use one of the (x, y) points to use for x and y and we use the slope m, to solve for b. Remember b is the point (0, b) the y-intercept.

Using the point-slope formula, we again find the slope first but then use either of the 2 (x, y) points to simplify the equation. Note that there is NO b (or y-intercept to calculate) but there is a little work in distributing.

For example if the slope is 4 and one of the points given (or on the graph) is (2, 6), then with the point-slope formula, we have: y – 6 = 4(x – 2) or y – 6 = 4x – 8 or y = 4x – 8 + 6 for a final equation of y = 4x – 2

Again, here is a great link for more examples.
