Days 36 and 37

Pre-Algebra: Chapter 3 Test (yesterday – Wednesday)
We took the Chapter 3 Test today and will finish tomorrow, Thursday

Thursday, October 19
Chapter 4, Lesson 1
We finished the Chapter 3 Test and began lesson 1 of Chapter 4. We learned about factors and divisibilty rules:
– Numbers divisible by 2 must be EVEN numbers
– Numbers divisible by 3 must have the sum of its digits divisible by 3.
– Numbers divisible by 4 must have the last 2 digits divisible by 4.
– Numbers divisible by 5 have in the one’s place either a 0 or 5.
– Numbers divisible by 6 must be divisible by 2 AND 3.
– Numbers divisible by 9 must have the sum of its digits divisible by 9.
– Numbers divisible by 10 must have a 0 in the one’s digit.

We also learned about monomials: integers or variables or products of integers and variables. 4, -5x, 2abc are monomials. 5x + 4 is NOT a monomial because its has a plus sign between to monomials. It is actually a Binomial (or 2 monomials put together).

Algebra: Chapter 4, Lesson 2 and 3 (yesterday, Wednesday)
Inequality of one step
Following the EXACT same steps as equalities, we learned to solve 1 step equations with inequalities. The ONLY difference is when multiplying or dividing by a negative number, we must reverse the sign of the inequality for the final solution.

Chapter 3, Lesson 4 and 5 (today, Thursday)
Inequalities of 2 steps
We do the same, again, as equalities and solve by:
– Distributing when required
– Combining like terms
– Adding or subtracting terms to isolate variables and numbers (constants)
– Multiplying or dividing to finish solving for the variable, remembering to reverse the sign of the inequality IF we multiply or divide by a NEGATIVE NUMBER.

We learned key phrases for lesson 5 (word translation problems):
At most — ≤
At least — ≥
No more than — ≤
No less than — ≥

We learned to read the problem, draw a picture or understand what is being asked of us before we start solving an equation or inequality.
