Percent and Estimation

Sometimes, when we work with percents, an exact answer is not needed. Sometimes, we can estimate. An example for percent estimation is adding a tip for a meal at a restaurant.

Here is an estimate example: A meal cost 20.00  dollars (with tax). A tip for a waiter or waitress doing a good job is 15%. How much is the meal including tip? Let’s start with:

  1. 15% is made up of 10% and 5%.
  2. 10% (remember 1/10) of 20.00 is 2.00
  3. 5% is half of 10%
  4. Half of 2.00 is 1.00, so the tip total is 2.00 + 1.00 or 3.00
  5. The total cost then is 20.00 plus the 3.00 tip or a total of 23.00 dollars
